How to Shape Your Children into Stable Adults

PARENTING CONFIDENT KIDS

Parenting can be a frustrating and sometimes thankless job. While different parents have different goals, your fundamental standard should be to shape your kids into well-adjusted and autonomous adults.

Here are some basic principles you should follow to start.

Provide a Stable Home Environment

Every child needs stability and consistency. This means providing a home environment that is clean and safe. That can be hard for people who live in lower-income neighborhoods, or who struggle to have the financial means to maintain their homes.

But if it is at all possible, it should be a priority. Stability also comes in the form of always having the nourishment they need. Make sure your kids always have the necessary food and water–not just to survive, but to grow healthy. A feeling of safety and the knowledge that they will never have to fear violence is critical for healthy brain development.

Get Them Involved in Activities

Kids need to explore. They need to try new things. They need to stretch their physical and mental limits. This is how they will discover hobbies and passions in life. They will develop invaluable skills–like critical thinking, strategy, and teamwork.

There are quite literally hundreds of potential options you can choose from when it comes to wholesome activities. Sports are always a fantastic possibility, with a huge variety ranging from soccer to dance to martial arts. Mentally stimulating activities like chess, Rubiks cubes, or puzzles are also great. Personal development programs can help youth feel unstoppable. Learning music can inspire beauty and art.

Know When to Push

You’re not only your child’s greatest supporter, but you are also their guide. You need to help your child develop life skills in order to live and thrive on their own. Sometimes, that can include discipline. Other times, that might include urging them to get a job or to move out when it’s appropriate. It’s also important to know when to not push. There will be times when your child is hurting and needs external support. They need someone they can be vulnerable with. At these times, it is best to listen and love. Try to validate their feelings regardless of the situation.

Every child is unique, so every child is going to need different things to help them thrive. Pay attention to their physical and mental health. Respect their autonomy within reason. Put in the effort that they deserve, and they will thank you for it as an adult.
